I’m not in good shape; can I still start?
Yes, everyone starts at a different level of physical fitness. When you begin you will be allowed to pace yourself and your fitness will improve over time.
Do I need a uniform?
Yes once you start formal training you will need a dogi, which is a traditional white uniform with a white belt. The dojo does not sell dogi however we can tell you where you can buy them. Both men and women should wear supportive undergarments. Training is barefoot so you do not require footwear. Bring a water bottle with water to each class.
How large are the classes?
Class size is kept small (typically less than 15 students) to provide more personal attention to individuals as each student learns in different ways.
During class time students are divided into smaller groups with assistant instructors, to go over new training details or review. In some cases "one on one" instructions is provided where necessary.
How do I get better?
A student’s progress in the martial arts is related to the time they spend in the class and the amount of personal training they do at home. Students are required to show proficiency in the basic movements and kata appropriate to their belt level. We recognize that each student’s personal circumstances and abilities are different and take that into account in the training.
How often are gradings?
Gradings are held in the spring and in the fall. Gradings comprise of demonstrating proficiency of movements appropriate to your level and also include writing a short essay on selected topics to demonstrate understanding of different aspects of the philosophy.
Why Grade?
Grading (Level testing) is a formal process used so that students can demonstrate progress towards their next level. It is also used for the instructor to provide feedback and emphasize areas for improvement.
Do you participate in tournaments?
No, we do not participate in tournaments or similar competitive sporting events.
Can I start fighting right away?
Fighting (sparring) skills are acquired as part of the training. Being able to punch and kick does not mean a student can spar. Once you can execute and understand basic skills you will be introduced to one step pre-arranged sequences (waza) that will allow you to improve your skills in a controlled way. You will not be pushed into a situation that you are not ready for.
Can I just learn weapons?
Students must have successfully attained the level of green belt before they may be allowed to learn weapons.
What is the basis for the instruction?
The Shaolin Tzu Martial Arts Academy provides a holistic integrated approach to the study of traditional martial arts. Shorinji Ryu Karate-do as taught by O’Sensei Richard Kim provides the basis for the curriculum. This is integrated with instruction in Okinawan Kobudo, Tai Chi Chuan and Daito Ryu Jujitsu.
